Gotta dance. Maybe.

I got a great Nordic Track T7 Si treadmill for Christmas.  I really like this model – it’s cool, it goes up and down, and it has awesome bells and whistles.  It’s been nice to have a solid piece of exercise equipment again.

I was using it the other day and was going at a brisk-but-manageable pace, when it spontaneously sped up to the maximum speed.  Yikes.  I nearly fell of the damned thing.  Call me crazy, but I don’t want to break my neck to be fit.  I am still within time to exchange it, so I called up Sears and they are going to bring me a new one.  (Thank you, Sears, for making this exchange easy.  I like it when a company makes my life easier.)

In the meantime, I won’t be using my possessed treadmill, so I thought I’d try something decidedly low tech.  Like taking an exercise class.  A friend of mine SWEARS by a new fad called Cardio Barre.

Essentially, it is a ballet class that has all of the beneficial barre warm ups, and none of the embarrassing (for me) dance routines that usually follow.  This might be just what I need.  Though I love to watch dancing, and my closest friends are some of the most talented dancers I know…I was not born with the gift.  In my mind I’m glorious and graceful, but in reality?  Um, NO.  I’ve taken close to 8 years of dance and have never broken out of the beginner class.

Sigh.

But there are lots of benefits to dance, and I’m willing to give it another shot.  Especially if no one is going to make me pas-de-bourrée across the floor.  Maybe now I’ll find my inner Baryshnikov.

Or maybe not.

Relaaaax. Don’t do it. When you wanna go to it.

Now that I am no longer at my job, I was worried that I would go stir-crazy and wouldn’t be able to fill my days.  I have to say…this hasn’t been the case.  I feel a little guilty that I am actually enjoying having some time off.  I am trying to take the opportunity to learn how to relax.  Which is something in the past that I haven’t done well.

I am a “Type A” go-go-go kind of person.  It makes me ridiculously happy to cross things off my To Do list.  When you look up “overachiever” in the dictionary, my mug will be staring back at you.  All these traits are seen as a good thing in our over-worked, hyper-productive American society.  But in the grand scheme of things, it’s not such a healthy paradigm.  It’s really hard for me to park myself on the couch and watch a whole movie.  Or spend an entire afternoon with a book and throw blanket.  I romanticize about doing these things but in reality?  Not so much.

So in my quest to better myself during this “in-between” time, I’m going to try and worry a little bit less, and relax a little bit more.

At the very least, it should help with some stress relief.

Just looking at this photo makes me feel relaxed!

Mazatlan, 2008

This picture reminds me of one of my most relaxing moments on a vacation I went on last year.  I just look at this picture and my blood pressure lowers 10 points!  Now, if only I were sitting in that chair sipping a Mai Tai…
